Music in this episode: “Somebody Told Me” by The Killers

That’s Japan! Episode One: The Kancho!

Erin: I am talking about dinner at Otakon Friday night, when my friends could not have hated Daryl “before” dinner as Daryl joined us there. Noah is talking about my friends on the way to dinner on Saturday night.

Contest Daryl Surat has won: the Anime Pulse Pickle contest, the Otakugeneration contest “Guess the Character in the Envelope Contest” – and an Anime News Network contest? How did he get an extra Patlabor box set?

Our first Contest: Win a Date with Daryl Surat!

Conditions for Winning:

  1. Are you female?
  2. Do you live in Florida? Preferably near Orlando? Or better still, 90 minutes south of Orlando?
  3. Are you single? (i.e. not involved in a long or serious relationship – NOT married. Divorced is OK!)
  4. Are you 18 or over? Age of Consent in Florida is 18
  5. Preferably, but not necessarily, you ought to be heterosexual. I guess it’s different for post-op transsexuals. You could still win based on the above conditions.

Chances are that so few people meet these conditions that basically if you enter, you win. There is the potential for multiple winners.

We sing Fast Karate‘s praises again.

Noah and Erin’s Favorite Videogames:

  • Nethack
  • Snake
  • Minesweeper
  • Defender
  • Solitaire (doesn’t count)
  • DDR
  • Prince of Persia 2

Noah suggests: Read Penny-Arcade. They liked Prince of Persia Sands of Time.

Ninja Consultant Confessional!!!

Noah doesn’t like/watch giant robot anime.

We’re going to be at AWA!!

What Giant Robot show should we devote our valuable to? You tell us!!

We mention our trip to Korea several times. But the less said about Rick the better.

I figured you might like to know that the kancho is also a pastime of Korean schoolkids. 😉 The Korean name for it is “ddong-chim”. There’s even a flash game of it floating around. Makes me wonder who came up with kancho-ing first. XD

    • The wikipedia page on Kancho mentions the Korean name as well!

      Also that icon is awesome!!!

      • doinkies says:

XD Thanks. I thought it went well with a comment about kancho-ing. 😛

Anyway, I voted for Space Runaway Ideon on the giant robot poll because of its infamous ending where everyone dies and the Ideon blows up the universe. You must see it if only for that ending alone, which is still well-remembered among mecha otaku in Japan. The rest…well, it’s rather doinky. XD

        • Ironically someone emailed us in the time between your comments and said “Everyone compares Eva to Ideon, but the two shows are nothing alike.” Thanks to your spoiler-iffic comment I now know why everyone compares the two shows — but geez! Spoilers!!

          • doinkies says:

            Well, I don’t think Ideon would be as well remembered today if it WASN’T for that ending. Sorry about the spoilers, but they’re pretty much necessary in an Ideon discussion. ^^;;

Yay! See you at AWA! 😀

I haven’t even download the show yet and I’m already laughing. Ah, all show notes should be that way. Nice icon btw.

    Manga Next

Wait are you or are you not going to Manga Next?

    • Re: Manga Next

Yes, we think so! Just to meet you, so you better show up!

        Re: Manga Next

I’m woundering if your jokeing or not……I finally lisened to your show last night. And sent you a really werid vvoice messege. I was going to rant, but couldn’t cause me Dad was threating to take away my phone. So you got a half asses Ino/Deidara thing.

The original Gundam is awesome. I would recommend the trilogy of movies that was made after the TV series aired. The pacing is better and they cut out the filler episodes. Unlike the newly released Zeta Gundam movies it’s not as obvious where the new animation was inserted.

It wouldn’t be a NC podcast without a dig at Snow Crash. 😛 For the record YT is cooler then Hiro, and I’m not 15 and I think it’s cool. So neyyyyah!

    • He Aaron! I don’t know if you’re going to check these comments… maybe I’ll also email. I have seen like two of the trilogy of Gundam movies, or, most of each one before I fell asleep. Noah, on the other hand, kept complaining “Why are we watching this? This sucks!” and so forth for each movie.

    Dating Real Men

If my last raise had been larger (or at least larger than my last rent hike), I would put money toward a plane ticket so that ANYONE could win the date with Daryl. So long as someone recorded it “Blind Date” style.

As for giant robot anime — Noah, you’re not less of a man for not watching it, so long as you drink half a bottle of scotch a day.

    Blowin up stuff in space

    I also don’t care for Giant-Robo genre.

One show which shows a lot of blowing stuff up in space, but also has an intelligible plot: Banner of the Stars (I). Nope it’s not a Giant-Robo anime, guess that explains the having a plot thing.

    (Daryl Surat)

So Alison and all those people hate me? A pity. Oh well, that was inevitable anyway.

The Patlabor set was courtesy of an Anime on DVD contest requiring readers to answer questions about the Patlabor movie itself. The questions were not difficult, but they did require that you either had seen the movie or read a review of the movie. Because of these guidelines, I won because they only got one other entry aside from mine. ANN, which I bet has like three times the readership of AoD, only got about four entries for their Patlabor contest. I plan to give away the spare set to Patlabor superfan and AWO listener Jeff “Rich Lather” Tatarek, and while I have the packaging and all that, I still haven’t actually sent it out.

It’s good that more people are watching Giant Robo, but despite the name, the robot stuff isn’t really the majority of the show. The likelihood of Erin hating the series is 50/50, since Giant Robo is from the same person who made G Gundam. It along with Zeta Gundam is my favorite of all the Gundam shows, so it clearly doesn’t suck. After all, I am an impeccable arbiter of taste and anyone who disagrees is WRONG. Note to self: Erin hates things that scream “this is from the 80s” (G Gundam is actually from the 90s) and so she and Clarissa will be mortal enemies, especially where Jem and the Holograms is concerned.

I second Aaron’s opinion that you guys should watch the Mobile Suit Gundam “0079” movie trilogy after Giant Robo, but I’d also say to follow it up with Char’s Counterattack. Those four movies constitute all the mandatory Gundam viewing which any RESPECTABLE anime fan should have seen: this must be why Gerald has never seen Char’s Counterattack outside of a untranslated VHS tape that Anime Village sent him.

Now then, there are two fatal oversights you’ve made with regards to this contest. Number one, Rule # 4 is in violation of the “half your age plus seven” formula for age appropriateness in relations that I read on the Internet one time and therefore it must be true. The minimum age would therefore be 20, but I also read on the Internet that women change drastically in personality between the ages of 18 and 24. Perhaps it should be 24 then. Whatever, it’s irrelevant because oversight number two is that the criteria you’ve put forth is lacking one prerequisite for dating Daryl Surat which is “must actually LIKE Daryl Surat.” As Robotech teaches us, you have to like someone first before you date them. Actually, they used the word “love” instead of “date.”

Unfortunately, that final criteria when taken with the rest actually eliminates everyone on the planet. A pity. Oh well, that was inevitable anyway.

The bright side is that it leaves me free to do and say whatever I damn well please instead of having to tell all those miserable lies guys tell women all the time. That’s why Daryl Surat is unfiltered honesty. Pray that I never fully understand THE TRUTH as well. That’d be akin to Darkseid discovering the Anti-Life Equation.

Paul von Oberstein. Kiichi Goto. Yotsuya. Shou Tucker, the Sewing Life Alchemist. The T-1000. Garrett from Thief. These are but a few of my heroes and role models.

    • So Alison and all those people hate me? A pity. Oh well, that was inevitable anyway.

It’s not like you were trying to make a good impression! Apparently several of my friends have a minimal requirement of pretending to be nice to people. I am incapable of masking my feelings, but fortunately, I am actually pretty nice, despite how I appear on the internet.

I plan to give away the spare set to Patlabor superfan and AWO listener Jeff “Rich Lather” Tatarek

      He was on Otakugeneration once.

It’s good that more people are watching Giant Robo, but despite the name, the robot stuff isn’t really the majority of the show. The likelihood of Erin hating the series is 50/50, since Giant Robo is from the same person who made G Gundam.

The liklihood of me hating any given series is about 50/50, but I have seen the first DVD of Giant Robo and recognize that it is high-quality stuff. I don’t hate the ’80’s, I mostly hate G-Gundam. I like Saint Seya and Bubblegum Crisis and Megazone 23 enough. Not enough to finish watching any of them instead of the new Honey & Clover series, but what can you do?

I second Aaron’s opinion that you guys should watch the Mobile Suit Gundam “0079” movie trilogy after Giant Robo, but I’d also say to follow it up with Char’s Counterattack. Those four movies constitute all the mandatory Gundam viewing which any RESPECTABLE anime fan should have seen: this must be why Gerald has never seen Char’s Counterattack outside of a untranslated VHS tape that Anime Village sent him.

I have, in fact, seen two out of the four possible films. I probably watched 30-60% of each one before getting distracted and/or falling asleep. This was back in ’02, so I no longer remember. I was interrupted for long stretches of time by Noah who kept whining, “Why are we watching this? This sucks! All Gundam is the same!” and so forth. It’s sort of like Noah’s constant protesting through the second half of Escaflowne. But I was watching those movies out of respect, damnit!

…it’s irrelevant because oversight number two is that the criteria you’ve put forth is lacking one prerequisite for dating Daryl Surat which is “must actually LIKE Daryl Surat.” As Robotech teaches us, you have to like someone first before you date them. Actually, they used the word “love” instead of “date.”

You don’t have to like someone to go on a blind date with them! I’ll have you know that my parents met on a blind date. Rule #6 should be something like, “Has never listened to Anime World Order, and/or our Otakon episode,” as that might pre-dispose girls against you. Because of the anti-girl rays that come out of your mouth when you speak, which is constantly.

Unfortunately, that final criteria when taken with the rest actually eliminates everyone on the planet. A pity. Oh well, that was inevitable anyway.

I don’t think you’ve considered the merits of girls who don’t speak English. Also you should probably start by reading this book. You are, technically, Asian.

The bright side is that it leaves me free to do and say whatever I damn well please instead of having to tell all those miserable lies guys tell women all the time.

You’re wrong about this, but I’ll email you about it.

    • tohoscope says:

So what does the winner get with that date with Surat? Dinner at the Super Jumbo Buffet and a (non-anime) movie? All the Pocky you can eat? What’s the deal?

      • Why do you ask? Do you know an eligible winner?

I guess we (podcasters who like Daryl) could throw some money in his direction to ensure that he does not take his date to McDonalds (because he blew his paycheck on RightStuf sales this month), if we thought it necessary.

There are more straightforward answers to your questions that would be in poor taste to post publicly. I’ll email you if you’d like.

        • tohoscope says:

I just figured any poor girl who’d suffer through a date with Daryl Surat should have some consolation or compensation. “Pick anything you’d like from the ‘Value Menu’…”

        • herohigh says:

I’m not a podcaster, but I’m willing to toss something in for this.

Also, I’ll try to spread the world of this contest to the Florida Anime Community. This is all a really good idea.

          • It is hilarious that your icon is Daryl! I should make some Daryl icons…

Part of the problem here is that Daryl has single-handedly isolated himself from probably 98% of all the female anime fans in Florida by badmouthing cosplayers to their faces. We witnessed this at Otakon.

So Daryl’s ideal date should have a thick skin and a sharp tongue, speaking metaphorically. (Female Trogdor? Maybe!)

          • animiko says:

This comment is such a bad way to introduce myself to you guys

First of all, I apologize because I don’t listen to the podcast (yet) for lack of time but I am familiar with your Nausicaa cosplay AND Princess Tutu is the fucking best shit ever, so should we happen to meet I’m sure we’d get along pretty fine.

I don’t think you’ll find anybody, but if you do I’m going to be depressed because I love Daryl and I won’t be able to have fake babies with him or show him all my cute cosplays if he has a girlfriend =( And I’m totally qualified too, I even weigh five pounds less than him now!

In all seriousness, Daryl Surat is really cute and I honestly don’t know why he doesn’t have a girlfriend. o______O

          • Re: This comment is such a bad way to introduce myself to you guys

He just said (on his own show) that he weighs 110 pounds – so you’re saying you only weigh 105?! I hope you’re really short, or uh, something.

It is hilarious to see cosplayers praising Daryl (even in jest), as he never does the same for them (even in jest).

          • animiko says:

Re: This comment is such a bad way to introduce myself to you guys

He weighs 118, he lied. Don’t worry, I’m not anorexic and I am pretty short.

Most of my cosplay friends hate Daryl. But I was a sarcastic, laid back person way before I was a cosplayer, so I guess that’s why I think he’s… funny?

          • Re: This comment is such a bad way to introduce myself to you guys

I grew up as a sarcastic child. Daryl isn’t nearly as offensive and grating as say, my dad. Maybe I like him because he reminds me of a really skinny Indian version of my dad – if my dad liked anime – which he doesn’t. I guess Daryl is nothing like my dad.

Whatever, I’m friending your journal because you are obviously a cool person. Be sure to watch this Princess Tutu AMV, and I’m sure I’ll meet you at AWA.

    Nice show this week.

    Giant robot suggestions:

    1. Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket – One of the more interesting Gundam stories, as it has a Zeon soldier and a young child as the main characters.

    2. Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team – Probably in the top 5 of all time great Gundam series.

    3. Evangelion – You’ve probably already seen this, but if you haven’t, I suggest you at least check it out.

(Sorry if any of these aren’t on the poll, for some reason I can’t see it).

Good to hear that someone else thinks G Gundam and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time are horrible.

  10. kimiden says:

    You don’t like G-Gundam!? Blashphemy!!

..seriously though, at least check out either Votoms, Gunbuster or Ideon upon finishing Giant Robo 😛

    • Goddamnit! You’re the 6th person to suggest Gunbuster! We’ve seen Gunbuster, we love Gunbuster, and we wait in joyful hope for a DVD release!

But Votoms and Ideon seem to be close seconds, so we’ll probably end up watching one or but of them next.

      • kimiden says:

Well can you blame us? Gunbuster is that great 😛

I suggest Votoms first though as it’s the least depressing of the two. Don’t believe me? Try watching the series to ep 38 then cut right to the movie as it picks up at said episode and delivers an ending so messed up that it rivals End of Evangelion and Big O Season 2 combined o_o

        ..Which reminds me, because of said headaches, avoid Season 2 of The Big O ^_^;

  11. woohoo AWA

another reason I’m glad I don’t live in Florida! Podcast Daryl is enough daryl for me.
is that what that knife is? here I’ve been using the relentless hammer of 80’s nostalgia.
I’m not a big mecha fan either, but i’m a girl, so that doesn’t count.
if pokemon were is space, would there be any chance of exploding pikachu?

  12. athena_chan says:

Question, who will be paying for the date with Daryl Surat?

I could probly deal with him for a free dinner and movie.

  13. kylandra says:

Ah, the Kancho. What a strange thing indeed. I always think of poor Az from Outpost Nine and his constant struggle to avoid being kancho-ed by his students.

I find the “Win a Date with Daryl Surat” contest hilarious. But at the same time, how could you possibly do something so cruel to one of your listeners?

Also, curtains? Now I don’t know about that. Though now I wonder if Erin and I will spawn our own wash of cross-podcast yuri curtain!fic. 😀

    • You are a hard person to stalk on the internet! Now I have friended your journal.

The wikipedai Kancho page links to the Outpost Nine essays. I’m still surprised JET doesn’t teach people about stuff like that.

So what do you think – monthly yaoi cast?

      • kylandra says:

Yeah, I don’t tend to link my LJ on the podcast or anything. It’s not like I really post on it anyway, since I am lazy and always forget to post about stuff I’m thinking over; plus I don’t really have anything interesting to say. So!

The yaoi cast sounds like fun. Would give me a chance to talk about stuff that doesn’t really fit into our AWO episodes or go over things in more detail. What are you thinking in terms of segments/content, other than I guess reviews?

(You didn’t use it on this reply, but I ♥ your Rock Lee icon.)

    Ideon

Ironically someone emailed us in the time between your comments and said “Everyone compares Eva to Ideon, but the two shows are nothing alike.” Thanks to your spoiler-iffic comment I now know why everyone compares the two shows — but geez! Spoilers!!

Yeah that was probably me. I deliberately left out the reason why some people say Eva is ripping SRI off because it is an entertaining show and I didn’t want to spoil it for you.I still stand by my comments though.
