I actually used Hetalia as a wee bit of a study guide in IB History this past year. I’ve always been pretty terrible at History; Hetalia helped me form associations with things that I would otherwise completely forget (of course, this was completely supplemental to actual studying; I’m not sure how the show could even be entertaining without some sort of history knowledge).

Totally worth the wait! Since those Black Lagoon episodes I wondered if you were gonna keep up with that level of discourse, and after listening to this episode I’m glad to hear you did. Also, the Angry Otaku is not alone in listening to Democracy Now! – though it did surprise me to hear that Japanese people aren’t really interested in history – very interesting indeed.

I don’t think it’s fair to say that Japanese people aren’t interested in history. I think it might be accurate to say that Japanese people don’t learn enough world history in school.
Specifically, I think a lot of my own shitty public school history lessons focused on World War II. Living in post-War America, a history of WWII seemed particularly relevant. But as an American, it’s also empowering to study WWII, since we won. In Japan, it would be horrible to study WWII history, even in the 1980’s. Why not focus on earlier Japanese history?
Anyway it might be the case that no kids anywhere are interested in history.

True, though recently I read an article about a resurgence of interest in history by Japanese women… maybe they’re more of the josei crowd…
